Taking a look into the first novel of an apocalyptic series called The Ushering. It begins a journey of mythic proportion with the title Amber. It follows a group of 3 unwitting teenagers who, after being empowered with supernatural gifts, find themselves doing battle against fallen angels and the demons serving them. One of the intertwining main themes of the book is finding one’s purpose, and an underlying theme in the book is “Finding the Superhero in Ourselves.” The Ushering: AMBER is, in the simplest terms, a superhero origin story with Biblical overtones.
These Teens, unaware of their abilities, begin this epic journey, stumbling along until the realization of their destiny, their purpose, becomes clear. Inspired by their mentors and directed by angels, they persevere to battle for good against absolute evil. All to stop Satan’s doomsday clock from signaling Armageddon. Set in 1969, the fallen angels begin the events that will eventually bring their champion, the antichrist, into existence. Using their special abilities, these 3 young people face the forces of Hell itself in hopes they have what it takes to push back the hands of the devil’s doomsday clock and prevent the ushering in of the unholy ambassador of Satan. Follow their exploits as they discover their abilities and stumble headlong into the frightening era of the apocalypse.
Throughout the novel, The Ushering: Amber, the reader wonders how these flawed, anger-ridden, socially challenged teens (who are empowered with supernatural abilities) can overcome. Dan-Dwayne takes us on a journey that delves into the lives of these young people, as well as into the scary world of the supernatural.
Actually, it’s for the adventurer in everyone. Yes, it fits the criteria of a young adult novel, but it speaks to adults of all ages. Partly because it was set in 1969. You see, in this story, the Lord of Hell has long-range plans. He moves his fallen angels and demons into play in order to manipulate the future. Those plans of his remain unspoken, but it is something I expect the reader to pick up on. Oh no, I’m starting to reveal spoilers. I better stop there.
This certainly sounds like an action-packed adventure. A little horror mixed with fantasy, and we can see by the cover description it is going to have something to do with the end of the world. Since this is book 1 of a 3-book trilogy, the world does not end in this novel. For these 4 gifted teens, there is a lot of adventure ahead.
