According to Gunter, a key ingredient in successful marketing for small business owners is to stand out in the crowd. She added, “I do this by encouraging my clients to write a one-problem, one-solution book. So, for example, for a dentist who might be wanting to focus on teeth whitening and target brides who want to have teeth whitening done before their wedding photos are taken, I would work with him to put together a book about teeth whitening that speaks directly to brides about how they can shine on their wedding day as well as in the pre-wedding and post-wedding photography when they undergo his teeth whitening procedure. As dentists review their own marketing and look at what their competitors are doing, I can assure you that none of their competitors will have a book like that.”
When host Daudi Magubi asked if books had as much power as a YouTube channel, Gunter replied, “Books have much more staying power. If you go to a networking meeting and you hand out a book, no one is going to throw that book away. If you hand out a flyer, a business card, or a brochure, people typically trash those after networking meetings. Businesses are discovering that old-school marketing methods like printed direct sales letters or printed books are working well now because people are so overwhelmed in the digital age. Getting something printed is a unique event now, whereas we used to be inundated with that. We’re no longer inundated with that because everyone’s gone digital and printed materials get your prospect’s attention, unlike all the YouTube videos or Facebook ads we’re inundated with.”
During the interview, Gunter shared how a book can take the place of your sales process, explaining, “Because I’m interviewing my client and converting the transcript of that conversation into a book, the book reflects my client talking in his/her own voice. This process makes your prospects feel like you’re having a conversation with them. If you conduct any type of presales meeting with prospects, this book serves as that one- on-one conversation.”
