It’s no secret that for a business to be successful, it must generate sales. And while there is certainly a wealth of opportunity for solopreneurs who have the talent and willingness to help others, many lack the sales skills that will allow them to reach their business’s full potential.
During the interview, Collins revealed one of the biggest roadblocks coaches have when it comes to selling is the fear they have to become a pushy salesperson, saying, “They are afraid they have to be a different person when they’re in a sales conversation. And anytime we’re asked to be inauthentic, we don’t want to do it, so we make up these stories in our heads telling ourselves that we can’t ever be good at sales because that would mean that we have to become some sort of sleazy, slimy salesperson. These stories just keep getting in the way. Because you can be so good at what you do. But if you don’t have the skill to sell it, you will never be successful.”
Collins went on to share her solution to overcoming this roadblock by taking what she calls a ‘Heart-Centered’ approach to sales, saying, “Heart-centered sales is going into the conversation with the intention for the person on the other end to come to an empowered ‘decision.’ I didn’t say an empowered ‘Yes’ because that’s just assuming that everyone’s the right fit for you. By asking really transformational questions, you can help the people who are the right fit to see things from a different point of view …. In the coaching world, we are selling the possibility of transformation. By helping them see their blind spots, whether it’s ‘I don’t have time’ or ‘I don’t have money’ or ‘I don’t know if I’m going to do this,’ and taking that heart-centered, empathic approach, you are able to show them what has been keeping them stuck this whole time. It’s just having a real conversation with them, putting the script aside and listening deeply to what they say, and responding in a way that creates a truly transformational conversation with them.”
Whether someone decides to work with Collins or not, her hope is that they walk away from that conversation thinking, “Oh, she’s right. That’s something I’ve got to work on.”
Listening to this episode, it’s easy to understand why Collins is so highly regarded by solopreneur coaches for her ability to transform the fear of sales into excitement for the conversation. It’s also why so many top coaches attribute their success to Collins’ strategies for creating and selling profitable packages and programs while remaining aligned with who they are so that they never have to feel pushy or sales-y.
