Author and coach Debra Johnson reveals how her book became more than a memoir – it’s a roadmap for reclaiming your power, breaking free from trauma, and embracing your full self.
Tell us about your journey! What led you to this point?
My journey has been one of deep transformation – from surviving trauma and carrying hidden pain, to choosing to step into healing and reclaim my light. It wasn’t a straight path; there were setbacks, dark nights, and moments when I doubted if I could ever feel whole again. But through it all, I learned that healing isn’t about perfection – it’s about showing up, being honest with yourself, and embracing every part of your story.
That’s what ultimately led me to write Reclaim Your Light and build a life helping others do the same.
What has been your biggest achievement?
Publishing Reclaim Your Light stands out as my biggest achievement because it represents more than just a book; it’s a tangible expression of my healing and a resource for others on similar journeys. Turning my personal experiences into something that empowers people to break free from trauma, rediscover their worth, and step into their own light feels like the most meaningful legacy I could create.
What’s the biggest result you’ve helped your clients achieve?
The biggest transformation I help my clients achieve is reconnecting with their inner light – the part of themselves that trauma tried to dim or erase. Through coaching and healing work, they move from feelings of overwhelm, shame, or stuckness, into clarity, confidence, and soulful living. It’s about shifting from surviving to thriving, and discovering that their light was never really lost – it just needed to be reclaimed.
What would be your biggest piece of advice for readers who want to achieve the same?
My biggest advice is to be patient and compassionate with yourself. Healing isn’t a race or a checklist; it’s a deeply personal and often nonlinear process. Give yourself permission to feel what you need to feel, and trust that every step – even the hard, messy ones, are part of reclaiming your light. Don’t rush the process or compare your journey to anyone else’s. Your light is unique, and it shines brightest when you honor your own pace.
What are the biggest mistakes you see people make, and how can they be avoided?
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people trying to hide from their pain or pretending they’re “fine” to avoid discomfort. Healing requires courage to face what’s real, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Another common trap is rushing, expecting healing to look a certain way or happen quickly. These can be avoided by creating safe spaces to feel honest, seeking support when needed, and embracing patience and self-kindness as part of the journey.
How do you plan to further grow your business?
I plan to grow by expanding Reclaim Your Light beyond the book through workshops, group coaching, and an upcoming companion app filled with meditations, journaling prompts, and healing tools. My goal is to create accessible spaces where people can connect with their light at their own pace and feel supported throughout their healing process. I also want to keep speaking and sharing stories that inspire others to step into their truth.
