Lorien Clemens of PetHub.com: Combining preparedness and technology to get lost pets home faster

NFC means “near field communication”. It’s a digital technology that’s also embedded in some of our tags. You use your smart phone to find it. Not all smart phones can read NFC technology. The newer phones can. You simply have to get within an inch or two of the tag, and it automatically reads it. One place where a lot of people are familiar with NFC technology is in credit cards. You just have to tap your credit card when you pay and it automatically puts your credit card information into the payment portal. That’s an NFC chip that’s inside there. So it’s the same technology that’s in some of our new tags.

“GPS mapping”… The way that works is were harnessing the power of your smart phone. Everyone’s walking around with a GPS device in their hands now. By scanning that tag into the QR code or the NFC, our system knows it’s been scanned by a mobile device and asks the user if they can share his location to help the lost pet get home. When you share the location, and the majority of people do because they want help that lost pet get home, it will send an e-mail notification to the pets parents with a map of where the pet was found.

And, “Bluetooth” is another wireless technology that is in our brand-new Signal-ID tags. Bluetooth works with most of the new phones… Some of the older phones Bluetooth doesn’t work with as well. It’s a low-energy wireless technology that communicates between the tag and your phone. In this case, it’s a specific app created, called a Signal-Tag (TM) app, and it helps locate where your pet is. So you can be hundreds of feet away from your pet when you’re trying to find it and it will notify you on your phone that you’re near your pet, and it will help you find the pet quickly. Does that make sense?

Virginia: So this is something you would use, rather than a person who found your pet?

Lorien: Correct. However, the cool thing is that this is almost crowdsourcing to find your pet. Let’s say that your pet runs away and they have a Signal-Tag (TM) on. I said before that you would rally your neighbors to help look for your pet. You can share that profile with the other people through the app. Then, if their phone gets within 100 feet (or more, depending on their phone) of the pet it will send you a notification on your phone. You may still be 2 to 3 blocks away from where your pet is, but they are right next to him, maybe in their backyard. Their phone picks up and notifies you, too. So it’s really a cool way to use crowdsourcing for pet recovery.

Virginia: okay, that’s very interesting.  These days technology has advanced to the point that it is inexpensive and really is making our lives easier.
