Sherry Liles – When A Legend Becomes A Legacy

Legacy becomes a legend when a person’s cumulative actions, values, and character rise beyond personal achievement and become an enduring, widely retold cultural story that shapes generations.

Legacy vs. Legend: The Key Differences

  • Legacy: Focused on what you leave in people and the quiet, daily choices, mentorship, values, or structures that uplift others. It is built through sustained service and quiet consistency rather than a desire for fame.
  • Legend: Focused on widespread recognition, monumental impact, and extraordinary achievements that permanently alter the landscape of a craft, culture, or community.

When the Shift Happens

  • When the impact outlives the individual: A legacy transitions into legendary status when stories, principles, and influence keep growing long after the person’s active career—or life—has ended.
  • From self to service: True legends are rarely earned by chasing fame; they are cemented when a person’s life work becomes a public touchstone that people feel compelled to preserve and pass down.

Here is a heartfelt message about former First Lady Sherry Liles of Calvay Church from Dinora Brandon, the current pastor’s wife.

“Words fall short when trying to honor a woman who has meant more to me than words could ever adequately express. Sherry Liles was so much more than a pastor’s wife. She was a mentor, my biggest cheerleader, and one of the greatest influences in my life. From an incredible leader to a loving wife and mother, she set a high standard! I had the wonderful privilege of learning from her and witnessing firsthand what it looks like to love people well and serve God faithfully through EVERY season of life, and boy, there were some tough seasons! When others would have given up, she stood stronger, loved harder, and leaned deeper into the faithful love of Jesus. His faithful love held her through it all and has now carried her into eternity. This is what a life rooted in Christ truly looks like!

She has left behind a beautiful legacy of faithfulness, sacrifice, and unwavering love for God, family, and His church. While my heart is hurting that she is no longer on this earth, what a comfort it is to know that the One she loved and served so faithfully has welcomed her home. She finished her race. She kept the faith, and now her legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched!

To her husband, Bishop Ron Liles, the way you loved her to the very end was remarkable. You were truly the hands and feet of Jesus. Makes me think of Ephesians 5:25: “…love your wives, just as Christ loved the church”. You did just that. Thank you for the beautiful example you gave us. My Tommy and I are forever grateful for you in our lives and are here for you!

To all the family, we love you and continue to pray for God’s comfort and peace to cover you all!

To our Calvary family, we were blessed to have been loved by Sherry Liles!

Sherry Colley Liles! She epitomizes grace, strength, intelligence & beauty.

Sherry Colley Liles was born on October 3, 1947. She finished her earthly journey and went to be with her Lord and Saviour on October 20, 2026. Sherry was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, to the late John Owen Colley Sr. and Florence Stout Colley. She was the middle child, with an older brother, John Owen Colley Jr., by 5 years, and a younger sister, Donna Colley Reardon, by 8 1/2 years.

From a young age, Sherry had a strong Godly influence in her life from her mom and maternal grandmother, from whom she cultivated her lifelong passion for God’s kingdom. She was saved at a country church revival at 8 and was baptized that same year.

Sherry valued education deeply and loved to learn. She earned honors in high school and college and was the first in her family to both attend and graduate college. She walked the stage at Arkansas State University in 1969, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education.

Sherry met the love of her life, Ron Liles, at age 18. They married in college in August of 1969 and were married for 57 wonderful years. Sherry adored being a mother. Their first daughter, Alison, was born in 1975. Ryan “Bo” Liles was born in 1979.

They moved to DeRidder, Louisiana, in 1972, where they served as assistant pastors at First Pentecostal Church of DeRidder. In late 1975, they moved to Fort Worth and became Senior Pastors of Calvary Church, where they served for over 40 years.

Sherry’s innate calling was to teach. She taught language arts and Spanish in Arkansas for 3 years, and language arts in Louisiana for 3 1⁄2 years. Even winning teacher of the year while in Louisiana. She also taught nearly every Sunday from age thirteen until she and Ron retired in 2015.

One of her most outstanding qualities was her commitment to a cause greater than herself: the kingdom of God. From teaching Sunday school and Bible quizzing to women’s conferences and everything in between, Sherry’s legacy lives on in the generations of Christians she helped along the way.

In 2018, Sherry was diagnosed with breast cancer and began the long road toward recovery. She fought hard for 8 years and handled the assignment with courage, grace and dignity.

Sherry loved all things British, including her Fort Worth “cottage,” where she and Ron lived together for 25 years. She loved cooking, hosting, gardening, decorating, thrifting and shopping. She loved a challenging crossword puzzle, a good book, and a pretty bouquet of flowers. Above all, she loved her family, her church, and her God.

Here are some of the other people’s comments about the impact Shery Liles had on their lives

Donna Hahn said, “When I met Sis. Sherry, I was 18. Many may not know that she was a great singer and an outstanding teacher. She was quick with a hug and a smile and would often say, “You’re my favorite.” I think she said that a lot! She could make you feel seen and loved. She adored her husband Ron, her two children and her God.
Through the years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the many changes, challenges and triumphs she overcame. She was steadfast through it all. She was the young adults’ Bible teacher and would have me start each lesson with a praise song. She transitioned from singing at altar service and handed that honor on to me. I will forever be grateful for the life she lived out loud as an example of a godly lady of faith.”

Other comments have been flowing in from around the country, like “She made such an impression on me when I was 18. She exhibited all the characteristics of the “fruits of the spirit” without fail, letting her light shine brightly, casting a glow on others.”
