There are many versions of mislabelling. Start off with reframing your judgements, and interrupt and reframe patterns of justifying or blaming the present based on the past. There is also mislabelling in association with trauma and past stresses that keeps the trauma active. This is because people are not shown how to go beyond the shock and emotional pain of the traumatic event. So the system keeps looping back to the deep feelings and what the brain has done most frequently and most recently. This is only because people are not shown how to use the whole brain in relation to their whole self to create a step beyond the known. People are not shown how to connect to the inner reality when it is the new seeds, because their system is shaped to trust the visible, the tangible, the outer reality – which is purely a momentum of what has already developed and so we keep looping into that has already been created, all because we don’t trust the seeds of the new creation. This is because when you name something your left brain dominant system doesn’t differentiate between habits, perceptions, generative responses and possibilities.
Most people are left-brain dominant, even when a creative personality. This leads to a brain response of being very literal and absolute. For Example, if you say,’ I’m stuck’. Your system shuts down and doesn’t search for creative options and instead goes to the experience of being stuck.
Find out for yourself, say you are stuck, and then feel your body response. It probably feels like you are at a closed door.
Now reframe the stuck and say something like, ‘I am pausing because I don’t want to repeat the past. I know some things are similar to the past but I also notice and can differentiate what is different and that I want to expand beyond habits.’ You may notice a feeling of openness and receptivity to new ideas compared to saying, I am stuck. The brain responds to how we label.
People do not realise how powerful they are. What you perceive, how you interpret what is going on and what you expect determines outcomes far more than most people realise. How you label your experience is far more powerful than what happened in your past or your genes.
(1) The science of epigenetics supports this, as does a great field of (2) research on the power of expectations and perceptions backing this approach, as well the proven experiences in my (3) practice over 26 years with clients and (4) personal life. When I flag where someone is mislabelling and offer an alternative and people experiment with this, they are astounded as to how fast a new reality is proven and evident.
Be open to how you interpret what is going on. In my practice and group work I see an incredible amount of mislabelling happening in daily life and when resolving trauma.
The brain doesn’t differentiate between an original experience or talking about it. The same area of the brain lights up and are deepened. The brain is very associational and fills the gaps and with the past momentum creates a habit. Most people don’t realise how talking, listening to and reading things that are associational to their past keeps activating the Old Map and neural pathways to the past.
- How do you plan on further growing your business?
I plan to keep running my online group training program of the Essentials Method, via my 30 Day Journey modules run each month. These are the skills we all needed to learn growing up. Just as we learnt to tell the time, do up shoelaces and drive a car, we also needed to know about our own brain in stress and about maintaining our whole self in our relationships and in life. The Essentials Method incorporates the Foundation, which is the self-talk component.
My vision is to reach the 12.8 million women in Australia and also women globally to show women the skills to prevent abuse and stress in their lives and create a ripple effect of intimacy, creativity and connection through their communities and children. I do work with men too. Due to repeated requests, I have also developed a training program to qualify others to run and facilitate the Essentials Method. I plan to run this internationally.
I plan to continue to create more self-paced programs, keep writing more books and other products to support people nationally and internationally to use their whole brain and develop their skills in living with the Essentials Method. I plan to employ a team of staff and Essential Method facilitators and continue my interviews on podcast, radio and tv to reach more people.
