Happiness in the Mourning as 2019: The Year of Joy Series Continues

Carol: Is happiness a virtue; a key to success; wellbeing…?

Karyn: Happiness is all of the above. It is a talent that can be developed. And when you have developed an attitude of happiness (even when circumstances might lead us to feel otherwise) that brings about a contagious energy. Everyone loves to be around a happy person. While “misery may love company,” it sure doesn’t enjoy it for long!

Carol: Can one be really happy in any area of life if not happy with themselves or within?

Karyn: No… that is a false pretense.

Carol: Why does happiness depend on ourselves?

Karyn: Because no one has the power to make anyone else happy. We only have the ability to contribute to the happiness of those who choose to be happy.

Carol: Beautiful! Any closing thoughts?

Karyn: Have you heard of “Smile Therapy?” On the news a while ago, it was reported that you might want to try this if you are having difficulty in raising up the corners of your lips. A certain group of instructors had all of their sober-faced Japanese employees learn better marketing techniques by holding a pencil in between their teeth. This forced the employees to “force a smile” by teaching the facial muscles how to put on the universal expression that speaks “happiness,” as sales were down. Eventually it was surmised, that this would trigger the brain into an automatic response of some sort of euphoria, by the simple practice of turning the corners of their mouths into an upright position. Hopeful, they thought, this exercise would induce more “natural grins” from their obliging employees. The amazing thing is, as the increase of smiles went up, so did sales! The proof was in the pudding; the putting on of a smile. Everyone who wore a smile, had increased sales and morale increased among the employees. The moral of the story is, everyone loves a smile!”

Carol: Karyn, very enlightening conversation today. I thank you and I’d like to make reference to either a verse of scripture or a song snippet as we have each month. Which would you like to share or offer this month?

Karyn: I’d be happy to share both!

Hebrews 1:9
“You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You above Your companions with the oil of joy.”
