Using Exercise to Reach Goals Quicker

JC: What other misconceptions are there besides the nutrition and rest, I know water’s another one. People don’t drink enough water. They don’t hydrate enough, muscles crave water, especially when we have those tough workouts.

Julie Ann: Well, yeah, most people don’t realize too, especially, and this where entrepreneurs come in and this is how I help them. Most people don’t realize their brain is also a muscle. And if they want their brain to work optimally, they need to drink more water, that’s right. So, if you’re thinking about flushing out toxins and flushing out fat and flushing out all the things that you do not want, you have to have more water. Also, to be able to have your stomach digest the food properly, you need to have enough water for your organs to function properly and do their job. You need to have enough water. It’s completely misunderstood how important it is. But the other one that people forget about, which is actually really important is play. Most people don’t put having fun on their schedule and if they don’t do that, that’s when all of a sudden that donut looks good, or they want to watch Netflix and their 10 shows in instead of going to the gym because they didn’t actually put fun into their schedule. So, they feel deprived.

JC: They feel deprived. Do you recommend a reward day?

Julie Ann: I don’t actually recommend using food as a reward because it makes the concept of there being good food and bad food, it limits what you can eat. And I don’t think there’s really such thing as bad food. Now there’s such thing as real food and processed food so there is a difference there, but the healthier that you eat and you crowd out those other things without depriving yourself, then you don’t feel like you’re missing out on anything. You want to make sure that you’re consciously choosing your treats. So, for me, I love cheese. I’m never going to give up cheese, but I plan for it. It’s my one thing. I will go down to the refrigerator in the middle of the night and eat it like a little gremlin while the door is open.

Julie Ann: There’s a huge difference between including it in your diet and just having it as a forbidden food. If you plan on having something, then that’s great. Like birthday cake, for example, part of life is food is included in celebrations. To deprive yourself of a family celebration or a friend’s birthday, isn’t necessarily the best choice because ultimately wellness is a journey. It’s not a destination, so you don’t get there and then you’re done, and you check that box and you’re finished. It’s a lifestyle. So, you can’t give up everything because at the end of your life, you want to enjoy it. But planning for those things, and just not maybe having an entire plate of chicken wings, or even if you do, going straight back to your next meal being healthy.

JC: So, what kind of myths do you find with the people that come looking for your support and your coaching?

Julie Ann: I would say the number one myth is that they think that it will happen automatically because they want it badly. It doesn’t work like that. You have to schedule it; you have to plan it. You have to make it a priority, wanting it is not enough to actually make it happen in your life.

Julie Ann: Well, how long did it take them to get the belly fat? We do live in a microwave society, and we think that we should have things right away. But if they can just notice the small wins as they’re going along, that will keep them going until they have those six pack abs if that’s their goal. Also, most people think that it’s about doing more sit ups when actually it’s changing their diet. So, that can be part of the problem, they’ll try one way of doing something, not get the results they want and think it doesn’t work at all. When in reality they’re just not doing the right thing for themselves.

JC: And there, there are also some myths about supplements. Do you hear a lot of stuff about supplements?

Julie Ann: Not as much anymore, but that being said, it is kind of, it’s dangerous. Anytime you’re introducing something into your body that is not natural. You are throwing off the balance of everything else. So doing something like a supplement without talking with a doctor, for example, isn’t always the best option. And it can also be really expensive urine because your body may not absorb it, or it might not actually the problem. For example, using B vitamins for energy. If that’s not what’s causing the lack of energy, it doesn’t matter if you take them or not, because it’s not going to solve the underlying issue that’s causing your lack of energy. You may already have plenty of B vitamin in your system. So, taking supplements and introducing things can actually cause more problems, ultimately, because of throwing your body’s special, unique balance out of whack. It wasn’t there naturally. So anytime you do that, you’ve going to realize that you’re throwing everything else off too.

JC: And sometimes there are prescription drugs also that people take that my affect the performance or any, anything else that we take even food?
