Jamie Kenny of Spanish Horses For Sale Discusses the Ins and Outs of Buying Competition and Dressage Horses from Spain

  • Firstly, I interview the client to assess the type of horse I should be locating.
  • Once I have located a potential candidate, I will go and see it personally and make a number of checks regarding behaviour and health based on my experience.
  • If it passes these tests, I will take a complete series of videos of the horse in action. The videos will depend on the client´s needs; for example, if the client is buying it for dressage, I will ride it in order to test the horse’s dressage skills.

Do you handle the transportation?

Yes, we offer a worldwide door-to-door service and work with a number of reputable companies that specialise in transporting by air.

Prior to shipment from Spain, we will prepare all the necessary documentation that will be required by the country of import and forward this to the shipping company. The shipping company will then handle the transport by air to the country of destination and customs clearance when it arrives. If it needs to be quarantined on arrival for a period of days, which some countries require, they will also handle this.

The entire process is designed to be completely hassle-free for you so that the next thing you will see will be the horse arriving at your door.

Are there any special considerations regarding the importation of horses?

Each country has different regulations. In general, in Europe, a simple health certificate is all that is needed, but in other countries, such as the USA, United Arab Emirates, Australia and others, it is a little more complicated as the horse will need to be tested for Piroplasmosis, which is a tick-borne disease. Animals that test positive for Piroplasmosis cannot be imported into those countries.

Of course, when dealing with any international client, we check out the particular importation requirements for the country of destination.
