Lisa: So what would you say is a common misconception people have about speaking and using speaking to grow their business?
Kelly: That you have to be perfect. People really identify more with being authentic and transparent. I don’t think their expecting perfection, they’d rather identify and relate to you.
Lisa: Would you also say that another misconception is, that people think having a book is only for certain industries?
Kelly: I would. When I’m working with clients who are writing books especially when they have doubts about whether or not someone wants to hear their voice. I ask them ‘What is that one thing that people always say they want from you, or that they say to you about your industry that drives you crazy?’ Hold onto that because there’s value there, whatever it is, whether its knitting or its quantum physics, whatever it is, there is value there.
Lisa: How do you show people that whatever profession they’re in, if they have a desire to speak speaking can help grow their business?
Kelly: The one thing that nobody can ever take away from you is your story. I would remind clients of mine that want to speak their importance of their story, it won’t sound like anyone else’s story and it won’t touch the same people. You got to get it out there because there are people waiting to hear it that haven’t heard anything like it before no matter what your profession.
Lisa: Ironically this is the top 2017 and President Elect Donald Trump is entering into the White House as we speak. How can Dare University help professionals, I mean there’s a lot of fear and concerns right now with him entering into office. With the work that you do, how can Dare University help?
Kelly: Where I think Dare University can help is helping individuals find their own certainty. Where we get into trouble is looking to get it from other people or something outside of our self. Where this program has the strength is that it will help someone create their own certainty. I can design my own life, I’m in control of my life, I can make this happen for me, not him, not this president and not that president. Whoever’s president I’m still going to be okay because I create my own certainty and that’s hugely important.
Lisa: What would you like to say before we close?
Kelly: What I’d like to leave people with is my own mantra and this came from Muhammed Ali and I’ve just decided to make it a part of my life and that is, “That impossible is not a fact”. Impossible is a dare, impossible is only impossible till you make it otherwise in your life, till you make it possible in your life and there’s so much out there for you that you haven’t even created a vision for yet.
